View Full Version : Area clubs
Anyone knowledgable about the area car clubs? Which ones are good, bad and just plain suck and why? Looking to restore, show, maybe some racing or even bench racing til my ride is up to par.

What make/model vehicle?
I have an old 65 Mustang (willed to me by a family member) and there's my El Camino but its not going to be restored for a while. Really prefer to restore/show my Mustang.
I've heard rumors of "drama" in some of the clubs. Really looking to avoid that and gain some much needed knowledge about restorations and technical data/ shops to avoid/ do's and do not's. Clubs should be about fun with a hobby not much else.

Only club that might be remotely helpful to you is LOWCOUNTRY MUSTANGS, but of course they are not filled with drama, just older people whith lots of classic cars, The clubs you are thinking about are the ones filled with the self centered holier than though type club like Palmetto state ford club or SMAF.
Unless of course you have a shiny turd and enjoy being part of circle jerks, but LCMC is more what you should look into I suppose.
Thanks for information, I'll google the Low Country club. I gotta be honest, I have a young face and don't want a bunch of old people around me "telling" me what to do all the time. I'm probably setting myself up for a fall here, but thats just the way older people have treated me in the past.
Maybe going to a few shows and just asking questions is the thing to do?
Really prefer the networking value of a good club.
Whats wrong with the Palmetto or SMAF clubs that makes you say that about them? Hey, if its blingified then they must know how to build em?
Any shops in the area I should avoid for paint/ body or mechanical work? Saw a wikid bad dark red mustang with a carbon fiber cowl induction hood rolling around town with "Roberts Automotive" on the front bumper. I assume Roberts builds some nice vehicles? Anyhow the license plate frame on the Mustang said "Too close for missiles, switching to guns". Kind of a loud car to !

Anybody can put a SHINY CAI on or some shiny chrome wheels or some shiny stuff on the inside) Yep, thats about the only mods, besides a bolt in catback. lol FEW actually tinker with their cars/trucks .

Yea, many know whos car that is on this board. Do what you want for shop wise. Some have good luck with them. Others differently. But that is anywhere I suppose.
If you do not find a club than just post here any questions etc you might have and/or help that you may need.

Don't let one persons oppinion spoil anything for you.
You need to check out the clubs for yourself. There are some good people in the local clubs.
There is a big show this weekend at Boone Hall Plantation. It is sponsored by Cripple Dog Hot Rod Shop......Most of the local clubs will be there, and, a lot of hot rods. Lots of prize money. It starts Friday...
Steve
Will do Fordnut :)
Boone Hall Plantation this Friday, heard its going to be big. No doubt, anyone who doesn't go will be missing out.
Hal, if there are any hatchets still lodged in the back this may be a good time to take them out???
What exactly happened that makes clubs in this area such a sore spot? Can't be that bad..

here is why SMAF and PSFC are so "bad"
In SMAF a small group of people hated a past group of people running the club...that past group running the club returned the favor and it was pure hell b/c there was nothing but bitching and bickering back and forth...its happened on many occasions. Both sides have been right and wrong on that one...im friends with both sides, I see it both ways...its gets irritating to get stuck in the middle of all that.
Now, Im the VP of smaf at the moment but b/c of work im not around much. Is it better now...to an extent. We dont have near the active members anymore, but those who are active get along well. Most of the guys left dont race, me and another person do some few and far between road racing, but i got out of drag racing when I blew up the engine in my old 01 saleen and then got f'd over by the guy supposedly fixing it. Some people got shiny CAI's and wheels, and some dont..maybe some exhaust work. Some people who left got out of the club and ended up with bagged trucks with ugly shiny wheels and a ricer front bumper (sorry jr, but you come off like a hypocrit in your statement)...its all in what you like, and what you percieve as dumb.
PSFC has/had its own problems as they broke away from smaf...and for what I dont really remember except to me at the time it seemed ludacris and over nothing, but some of the past leadership went with it, and some of the drama went that way to say the least.
The people in here who know me, know I took on the role of VP in order to try and fix what I thought was wrong with smaf. In the end there was nothing to fix...but either hte problems were out of smaf and never coming back or the naturally worked themselves out. We had a very good show season...better then anyone else on a consistency basis and helped out with a successful fire fighters show to raise money.
Lowcountry has/had its own set of problems in the past, I dont really know anything about them, I just know the past problems they caused for smaf at our peak when trying to become and MCA club. I could careless b/c I dont see being an MCA club really that big of a deal, never did. And SMAF was started b/c of a rigged election in LCMC waaaay back..it doesnt seem to be like that anymore. Attend a meeting for each club and see what you think. Im sure this is going to spark up some talk...but I was trying to basically lay it out straight. Some SMAF members admittedly started problems on purpose...and people running SMAF have easily done the same thing...no one is really that innocent in the end. They have parted ways and its over with being that neither group is really in or atleast active in the club anymore. They basically ruined it for one another with all the fighting.
Somebody needs to write a book, well maybe just a pamphlet about local mustang/ford club drama. I'll host the .pdf file, and when ever the subject comes up we can just point to the file.
:roflmao3:
Tim, Thanks for taking the time..
It all sounds like a lot more drama that it was worth but maybe all the clubs in the area are better off for it all.
Who has the biggest club and who is the most active?
Looking at PSFC's website that place has got it going on and SMAF is right there to. I say its worth it to join just for the networking value of making the Mustang resto easier. Parts locator, private sales, friendly advice and suggestion, making some good friends may be some bennies.
Mike has a great idea going there !

PSFC is probably the most "active" club...and thats bc of Kevin. People can love and hate kevin, but if your in his club, you ALWAYS have something to do. All 3 clubs have some very useful members when restoring old mustangs. Fordnut has "ol yeller", matt and his family/friends helped restore a 65 shelby...psfc has just as much knowledge if not more...and LCMC probably has the most # of people with "old" mustang knowledge bc that what the club is based around. SMAF and PSFC have members that are more of the "late model" crowd.
SMAF doesnt really have it going on anymore...we used to be the biggest, but I think lowcountry has hte most # of people now. I will probably catch alot of shit from any onlookers here, but i see smaf fizzling out completely at some point, I truly dont feel it will end up surviving unless some odd miracle comes around. We tried to save it...but in the end I think it was to far gone. Its alive and kicking now, well barely..i just dont know for how long.
And yes, smaf was filled with gobs of drama...everyone who bitches about smaf were part of the problem...those who were in smaf who bitch about hte people no longer in smaf...were part of the problem...before I became vp...I at one point was part of the problem...im not free of any guilt either.
People can love and hate kevin, but if your in his club, you ALWAYS have something to do.
I can guarantee that 99% of the time that "something to do" will not involve going to the drag strip.
Thats why, in my opinion, those clubs suck.

There was quite a few times where a group from the club back in the day went to the track on a consistent basis. IE: Jr, Me, Shane, Moellers ect...hell even Sr. came out to play once or twice. I quit cuz I can't afford to fix shit lol. But yes, SMAF never had an "official" outting to the track aside from road racing in alabama twice...somehow PSFC had official track days/hang outs when it came time for scotty to run though lol.

I'm thinking the same thing.. Gotta admit, from the words in just this thread alone Charleston is no different than several other major cities I've been to in the past.
Here is my take on the area clubs I've been in 2 of the 3 .
Lowcountry is a great club for older stangs . When I first joined it none of the older guys would talk to you because you had a new mustang . It honestly made a bunch of people feel like outsiders . They eventually changed their ways after they lost around 30 members to start SMAF . I've been considering joining Lowcountry Mustangs again and give it another shot .
SMAF started out a great club with tons of members and tons of events . But eventually all the warm and fuzzy feelings went away when a big piece shit named Kevin took over the club . Then everything was not about having fun anymore it turned into we have to make money to have fun . Many members brought up a drag day and Kevin quickly said no because the club wouldn't make money off of it . However there were weekly car shows that did make money and became the forte of the club . Shows only , no fun unless money could be made . Which I was very vocal about and eventually I quit the club when I was offered a refund from ricer Kevin since I wasn't happy with the direction of the club . I always thought it was a non-profit organization but damn was I wrong . Hell I was one of the founding members of SMAF !! I still say Kevin ran SMAF into the ground and he knows it that's why he quit and started his new clique .... I mean club .
Like Tim said SMAF has lost a ton of people and is nothing what it use to be . I know they got a good president now and that really helps a club .
PSFC : I don't know alot about them . I do know some of them actually drive their cars like a sports car and not worry about getting tire rubber on their 1/4 panels . I haven't got anything against PSFC but Kevin , I don't like him , never have and never will !

My take.
Check out whichever club interests you the most. I personally joined SMAF because, when I moved down here, I had a new Mustang and knew noone. I went after the group that would most likely share the same interests as I. Unfortunately, I became part of the drama and B.S. Hell, I showed my car WITH rubber on the quarters. I wore that shit like a badge of honor.
Sorry, I am starting to ramble.
Best suggestion I can make to you is, attend a couple of meetings for each of the clubs that you are interested in. That way you can make an educated decision on which group you would like to be part of. Or, for that matter, if none of the local clubs are for you. Don't let anyone else's opinions be your guide. Make your own conclusions. Noone says that you have to be a part of a "club" to hang out with who you want, or to get help on whatever it is you are working on. Odds are that whoever you talk to will know someone who has the information you seek.
Thanks,
Shaun

My rub on him is that he was using a non-profit to make a profit...
He wanted large #'s of members but they where to behave as lambs to slaughter ... or else.
He started a new club due to not getting what he wanted from LCMC ... then did the same with PSFC after he was voted out of office in SMAF.
Posing his car ... and getting away with it. Remember now, its only a GT ...

You know its a damn shame somebody didn't make accusation in some formal way against that guy Kevin to have him removed from his perch or somehow force him to make SMAF take part in a club sponsored drag racing event.

I tried my best to make my feelings shared on the making a profit thing and I was labeled as the guy that caused trouble . A majority of the SMAF members felt this way about me but ofcourse none would say anything to me or let alone here my side of why I thought the club was going wrong .
The sheeple all thought Kevin was doing in the best thing for the club and not carrying out his own personal agenda of what he thought a club was for .
My idea of a club is people who share the same love for a particular brand having fun and to hell with making money !

Sorry to hear that.. Seriously, I've been in a frustrating position similar to that and after thinking about "how much that club was worth to me", I just walked away and didn't look back.
I did like some clubs I've been a part of in the past. One club had such strict rules, just getting into the club was a minor miracle. You had to be sponsored into the club and voted on by membership to be allowed to be an official member. Short of "pain", it was like a gang iniation. I mean, if members didn't like your car, the way you dressed, talked or anything then you were not likely to get in.

Yes, I have a ricer bumper that came on the truck. It will be changed soon. But of course I am building on the truck, cutting on it and even shaving doors, etc. Not just cleaning it up and showing at a cruisein. I mean local car show.
Only real show in the area is MAYBE the cripple dog show and/or street thunder show. But heavenly forbid "my kind" show up. Stock vehicles do not show up shows I go to. You know real shows out of the area that last more than 2 - 8 hours.
I just hope the current administration of all CLUBS listen to members and get their heads out of their asses and know what fun is instead of PROFIT.
My end rant.
Drive it, drag it , race it, cruise it, is where its at. Stock vehicles do not belong on a show field unless it is a CLASSIC or something worth looking at.! My opinion only.

forgot to mention...as another fall out from smaf...I had this big agenda to bring racing to smaf like those of hte past wanted, and I wanted. In a nut shell...
Working the talladega road race made smaf good money, we were parlaying that money and show money and dyno day money into splitting roebling road with the georgia mca club we do talladega with. That money made would pay to rent out a local 1/8 mile track...and then continously go back and forth between the 2. We had 10 poeple scheduled to go and work talladega...all but Me, Barry, Matt C. bailed in one form or another...whcih is fine..but it happened within 1 week of the event. It was at that point I scrapped my idea of smaf doing racing events 2 or 3 times a year b/c it was obvious no one wanted or could participate and be counted on. I was going to risk $1000's on a "maybe" at best. I already vented to the club about this...it made us look HORRIBLE down there at talladega.
So yes, I legitly tried to get smaf to race...it failed miserably...so now I just attend when I can.
ok, caught up with this guy "Scott" who owns a dark red Terminator. He was filling up his beast with liquid refreshment. Asked what he had in it and he says "just a small block like all the other Mustangs in the area".
Asked Scott a few questions about clubs in the area and all he had to say was, "If your into classics, goto Low Country and if your into late models goto SMAF". Scott said he's in the PSFC club and likes it very much because it doesn't have any drama and their club president is doing a great job. Asked Scott some other questions about past issues with the area clubs and he said "Ask Jeff Demerum, Hal Jr and Kevin McGee about the SMAF drama department and why they are no longer members of any club in the area". After that he didn't look at me or say anything and just drove away. Kind of left me hang'n there..

I wonder why he didn't say join the PSFC ? If he enjoys it why wouldn't you or anyone else for that matter ? You must of rubbed Scott wrong by dropping a couple of names . Or like I said they have a clique not a club .
It's funny because Scott caused a little drama of his own in other departments . It seems Scott and myself always had a little rivalry but honestly it was all fun and games and went to far . I don't have anything against Scott or his rolling billboard . Scott doesn't like me because I talk shit about his buddy Kevin . #1 reason why smaf has the reputation it has...Scotty
Im sure someone will point you in the direction of quite a few "quotes" that are elsewhere. He was VP at the time, and in his 2nd term as president, left us hanging when he quit out of no where.
Im sure someone will also give you a link to a few legendary SVTP threads under his various names.
Remember when I said...people in smaf hated the leadership, and the leadership hated them back and it caused drama...well there is 1 member of that. THere is no drama in PSFC b/c its that small group of friends who got along...they dont just let "anyone" in like smaf did...smaf got to big to fast...and after the honeymoon feeling was over and people became themselves...they just butted heads...happens in all aspects of life, but a car club is supposed to be enjoyable.

Just being objective here..
It was a whole lot of mud slinging going both ways which doesn't seem to have concluded since. I don't think either side was real clear about the issues and it just ended up in what Scott said yesterday, a drama club. No offense to anyone, I know I wasn't there to see and hear it all (thank God).
No doubt, its best that the cliques involved went their own way.
The famous Scotty quotes, oh man that was some funny stuff but who wants crap like that as the front page to their forum?

To me his whole attitude on the subject was to just let it be over, he did shake his head a lot though. After reading the link at the Charleston Racing forum, its kind of obvious why he was like that. I probably would be to.

To me his whole attitude on the subject was to just let it be over, he did shake his head a lot though. After reading the link at the Charleston Racing forum, its kind of obvious why he was like that. I probably would be to.
That might be the reason he didn't invite you to join the PSFC

Doc: If you want any information about anything about SMAF, just PM me. I will be glad to tell you about anything you want too know. There is nothing to hide.
I am one of the founding members, and, also the only past President that is still in the club.....
And, I have the best of all worlds....A '70 Mustang Fastback with a 460 in her and a '99 Lightning.......Oh yeah...almost forgot...also I have a '97 Mustang GT....
But, as everyone has said before...I don't drag race.....I don't have anything against it, I just can't afford it....and, I am old....

I hope to run next spring several times with my 67 stang. I'm hoping midway will run a 1/4 sometime???
You are never too old to take a pass, as long as you don't break. Bill

"Ask Jeff Demerum, Hal Jr and Kevin McGee about the SMAF drama department and why they are no longer members of any club in the area". After that he didn't look at me or say anything and just drove away. Kind of left me hang'n there..
Man I guess he hasn't come around! Scott wasn't a bad guy, then after he got back from oversea's he seemed to just transform into the guy you saw posting on the thread back in 05. He acted in a way you just wouldn't expect out of a military/family man in his 30's. Yet I still didn't have any ill feelings towards him and never got involved in that "mudslinging" as I had friends on both sides. That was until right before MW I was in a pinch with needing to borrow a pulley puller and knew Scott had one and called him for two days straight and he downright ignored my phone calls. Knowing that I needed one to get my car running he just ignored them, couldn't even call to let me know he had no interest in lending me a hand for some reason. I saw him a few days later at MW and he looked right at me a turned away. Since then I have lost a lot of respect for that guy. The reason I'm not in any "club" in this area is because I honestly don't have time and I'm just not interested. The only reason I even "joined" was to hang around friends with mutual interest, once it became more than than (making money, drama, people getting personal) I really wasn't interested.

Exactly. I don't have anything bad to say about SMAF now if you are looking for a good club there are some good people in charge now. I'm not a member simply due to lack of interest and time.

Fella's,
Not here to stir it up. Just wanted to say for what ever its worth that I'm sorry for what ever issues I've caused any of you in the past.
Reading this thread, its easy to see there are many crowded closets. I don't hold any grudges and I'm sorry to those who hold any against myself or any of the area car clubs and their past/current membership.
If my actions in the past have spoiled your views on this areas automotive events, I am very sorry for anyone having a view remotely similar to that.
I hope everyone here has a great Christmas and happy New Year.

Damn, Scott Morison posting up! What a surprise. Too bad I didn't get to run you in my nitrous Mach 1 before it was wrecked. It might have made for a good race. I always wanted to beat the kid who, if he was losing the basketball game, would take his ball and go home. No offense Scott, but you never did impress me with your driving skills. Hopefully you've gotten better with practice (or you converted to an auto).
As a founding member of SMAF, I can agree that the club did grow too fast, had some members that were immature at times, and definately had a pres that did not want to support a sizable drag racing group (mostly because Kevin wasn't into drag racing, I suspect). There were also some disagreements over the supporting vendors (ie Robert's auto) and basically some personality differences. I lost my enthusiasm with the club after trying to gain MCA membership for over a year, and coming up short. The club even paid our officers to travel to FL and plead our case, to no avail.
I still stay in contact with some members of several clubs and we all get along OK. DOC pick any club and test the waters with them. Each have benefits and negatives. If you wanna race, you've found the right place!

Can't believe it.. Just asked for some help in trying to find a good club in the area and all I get is drama from problems you all created for yourselves, at least thats the way it appears.

Nobody is gonna ban you lol, you drama queen you!
Like Shane said, your post history is suspect. You made some prying comments about some subjects that new comers shouldn't have knowledge about(not this thread).
If you want everyone to shut up about it, then post a picture or show up to a meet in person. Otherwise...you're always gonna be the pivot man in this circle jerk (which is fine by some of us).
Personally, I was hoping that you woud cry a little more. You know...put up more of a fight. Sadly, your ability to enhance/sustain the drama is weak. Give us something to feed off of.
Your biggest fan,

I try.
The drama tank is running on fumes right now and Doc seems like the closest filling station at the moment.
Don't let us down, "Man of the Shadows".

What about the PM?
From the looks of you at the gas station, I'd swear your not past your teenage years. Where was your so called "great car" parked or were you riding with mommy and daddy?
