I checked my account last week monday June 6th and $218 was missing and whoever spent $146 @ walmart. $60 @ kangaroo gas station (on hwy 17 in mt pleasant), Pilot gas station for $4, Pilot Gas station for $5, and mcdonalds for $2.
It all started on June 4th according to my bank statement. When I noticed these charges I checked my wallet and my debit card is in my wallet ?!?!. So I went straight to the bank and filed a despute and they didnt seem to believe what I was telling them. I received a letter in the mail from my bank today stating that they declined my dispute because my debit card was in my possession. They told me to contact the police and file a report, but whenever Ive filed police reports in the past (stolen car, car broken into, ect) I never could figure out whats the purpose because nothing gets resolved...

What can I do to get my money back? Before anyone ask, no one other than I is authorized to use my card, I dont leave my wallet hanging around, I never lost or misplaced my wallet this year.

Ive read about cards being duplicated but how is that possible. Whoever used my money bought gas and Im pretty sure you need to actually have the card to buy gas. Seems like walmart would check for id also. Im stumped.

majority of the time when i use my card at walmart they never ask for id. i don't understand why the bank won't help you since you didn't do it. i HATE a thief i hope you find out who it is.

Look at the charges from a few days before and see if you can figure out who might have jacked your info. I had this happen to a friend, but his was his credit card and he just disputed it and it went away. His may have been a little easier though because the purchases were larger, and out of the ordinary for him. However, he did still have the card in his possesion and he was the only authorized user, same as you.

He could never prove it, but he thought the info was stolen by a McDonalds employee.

Also, if you really wanted to, you could get the times that the charges were made and see if any of the stores has some surveillance footage from those times. Some of the larger stores probably keep footage on file for a decent amount of time. You are probably going to have to file a police report and have an officer do this for you though.

You dont happen to bank with citibank, do you?
They were hacked and a lot of info stolen not long ago. Long shot, just asking.

Call a lawyer. Many will do free consultation.

well if was with a duplicat card and if they didnt have your pin number they would of had to have it ran as credit and sign for it at walmart so you may be able prove that the sig isnt yours

Sorry to hear of your loss. Stories like this just reinforce my personal policy of not having a debit card at all. The fraud laws on the books now mainly just benefit credit cards, not debit cards. That may be one element of why you got stonewalled at your bank.

I have a couple of credit cards with ridiculously low limits, so if someone jacks those numbers they aren't getting far. They would probably be pissed that they did all the detective work to jack my number for little to no gain!

For what its worth, I don't even sign the back of my credit cards. Instead, I put in big letters "Photo ID Required". I've actually had a few clerks ask for my ID after seeing this on the back of my card.

I have scfed credit union. I used my card on the 4th once and that was at a gas station on redbank road next to circle k. My account was also charged all those charges the same day. I asked the bank how could this happen if my debit card was in my wallet the whole time. They said they didn't know. I highly doubt I'm the first person ever to have this happen to them. Maybe they didn't want to tell me how it could happen because it could possibly be their fault some way down the line. When I look around online it seems like my issue is pretty common. Ill be on their backs tomorrow and if they can't help me I'm going to close all my accounts there. I'm also going to file a police report tomorrow.

File a report. What jurisdiction do you live in? I can help get video if that is the Pilot just off I-26 (Exit 199), but only if a report is filed and you have a case number.

sorry to hijack the thread but...
Can you have the homeless guy deported from that area? He's approached me at least 4 or 5 different times begging for money for a serpentine belt for his truck...I dont have an issue with him necessarily, even though that same truck has been "broken" for about 2 months now, but my gf said he's approached her before 3 or 4 times now too. This bothers me. That man needs to gtfo. The gf said he walked to a woman (alone) at the ATM machine in front of Tractor Supply as she was getting her money from the machine. That shit will get you shot. Anywho, just wondering.

and it seems that cash is the smartest way to know for sure where youre money is being spent.

yea, roughly early 30s, says his name is John every time he walks up. He stinks like no other, and ive watched him while pumping gas move from every car with people in them to the next. He ventures from the Hess/Pilot area down to Tractor Supply, Dollar General, Advance Auto area.

He either asks for money for his serpentine belt, or a ride to Trolley Road. I think he may be pulling a scam to make money. I doubt he's even homeless. If he needs a ride all the way to Trolley every time, then how the hell did he get to the Interstate? I damn sure hope he isn't walking that far every day to beg.

Yeah... Panhandling and loitering are two criminal charges he could face. The Pilot can also put him on trespass. That way if he returns, he can be arrested for trespass after notice. If you call the police when it happens and they get out there before he leaves, there is a good chance he can get locked up.

Back to OP.... I've seen on the news where the thieves have been acting like repairman for the card readers and placing recorders in the machines. They get the card magnetic strip info and make duplicate cards. The duplicate cards along with the pin number they recorded gets them anything they want. They were working very successfully through the Micheal's stores. I would assume they have hit up other places by now or copy cat thieves have popped up.

My daughters senior trip last year her card got jacked at Disney World for almost $400.00, but we made the report to SCFCU they reissued her another card with a new number, returned her money, and kept her old card, to see if the thieves would use it some more so they could catch them. Mine with SCFCU, I get an email everytime it is used, within about 20 minutes, so if its something I didn't do I can get on it quick. I learned that cause my dad is chairman of the board at SCFCU. They can also scan the magnetic strip on your card while its in your wallet in your back pocket, and never touch you, technology helps the thieves as well as normal people for sure.

You're right, unfortunately you don't even need someone's debit card anymore to steal it. A girl I used to work with a few years ago when I was working at Moe's used to jack debit card numbers and use them for small purchases all over town so people wouldn't notice because they were smaller amounts. Eventually she did get caught, I was surprised at how easy it is to do it.

I do some banking with SCFCU also, and I'm surprised they're not helping you out.

Just got off the phone with the bank and they said my claim was denied because my pin # was used for all these charges, wow. So now I'm gonna file the police report and try viewing some surveillance cams if possible. I pay to see whoever this person is. They tried to say someone took my card that knew my pin number but who goes around telling people their pin numbers. I was told them about what I read online and they kept saying its someone I know. I was home all day sat til that evening then I went to fuel up in goose creek and pick up my pontiac. The charges were made when I was still at home and if my card wasn't in my possession I would of found out when I went to the gas station that evening. The bank don't want to hear that though.

You can scan a debit card's info onto a blank card, that way you would still need the pin when you went to swipe it.

Sounds like it's someone you know, or somebody that's been following you around for a while at least.

this is exactly what they were doing at the Michaels stores. the card readers were recording the pin numbers and some how making it easy to duplicate cards. but the outfit that was duplicating the cards was in California. I guess we have a local group now. The investigators at the bank need to read the newspaper more.

Ok I called and also went to the bank a few mins ago and they said the walmart ($146) and kagaroo ($60) were done in mt pleasant, sc and the 2 pilots and mcdonalds charges were done in bowman, sc. I have to bowman since mid may and the only time I've been through mt pleasant lately is when I'm leaving the wando port. All the bank is telling me is they can't do anything because the pin # was used and I keep explaining to them my debit card was in my possession the whole time. Seems like I'm wasting my time so I'm gonna close all my accounts there and go else where. Maybe bank of america? Or wachovia? I would say maybe this happened at the track but I haven't been to bowman since mid may and I usually fuel up before I leave home and I eat at the track so my debit card info couldn't of been hacked in bowman.

For what its worth, I don't even sign the back of my credit cards. Instead, I put in big letters "Photo ID Required". I've actually had a few clerks ask for my ID after seeing this on the back of my card.

I have the same thing on mine. All my cards say "ASK FOR I.D". I was told if you have this on your card and its stolen that used the retailer is liable for damages since they didn't ask for I.D as requested on the back of the card. I don't know how true that is, but it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling I suppose. My wife had a guy try to take a picture with his camera phone of her check book once in Walmart. She opened her wallet up to use her debit card and her checks sit on the other side, and apparently the clerk noticed the man acting suspicious and closed my wife's wallet for her. Its extremely unfortunate how low our society has gone over the past few decades. It just goes to show you that you can't trust anyone.

I guess this is another reason I love banking with USAA. They have a top-notch fraud department. When I used to travel a lot for work they once declined my card since I used it in the AM in Charleston and then tried using it in Seattle that evening. I got a call about 5 minutes after it was declined by a USAA representative asking if I was trying to use my card in Seattle. I recommend anyone that can use USAA give them a look.

x2.

I would go to first citizens or first federal. I too dumped SCFCU. My family have been banking with them for over 20 years, I went in last year to get a small loan for a used car. They flat out refused an 8k loan. I had the money in my account, but I didnt want to pull it all out and have nothing.

They said they could let me borrow against the money in my account and charge me interest. I looked they lady dead in the eye and said "that is the stupidest thing ive ever heard." Closed my accounts and took my personal accounts to First Citizens. That is were I have my business account.

Ive was banking with them for less than a year, opened the personal account and then asked for a loan in the same day AND THEY CUT ME A FUCKING CHECK THE SAME DAY. Oh yeah with a better interest rate. The car deal fell through but the point still stands.

Also my home mortgage got sold to bank of america. I hate these bastards with a passion.

Yes Bank of America screws everybody over every chance they get, I can't believe all the fees they manage to charge too. The only banking I do with SCFCU is my car loan, it's the 3rd one I've done with them and they've granted it every time, that is THE only reason I use them.

Ok I went to another branch of scfed credit union and they looked at my paperwork and their computer and saw that my paperwork that I got after I disputed the charge states that my pin was used but their computer is showing a signature was actually used and not the pin. So now they are redoing the whole process. I guess some branches are better than others. He also said he didn't understand how they made that mistake after they made me wait until the charges were processed before I could dispute it because pin based charges are instant and have no processing time.

BOA is TERRIBLE! So is Heritage Trust... They drafted my bills a day early due to a holiday and slapped me with $500 in fees (4-5 years ago). After arguing for an hour, I got the lady to refund my money and went to BOA. Only to learn they are terrible as well. Fee's, fee's, fee's. On EVERYTHING!

SCFCU is good for financing cars (for me anyhow), but I am looking to go elsewhere.

The only reason I'm still with Wachovia is because I still to this day have a student checking account which means no minimum balance and no fees. My credit score is a 832 and they tried to give a 16% interest rate when I called about a car loan.

I've been advised by attorney once to use the home town bank if you can. I use to have BofA and they are horrible. Even the tellers have an attitude. I've since switched to First Federal around 5 yrs ago and will never look back. I like banking with first federal. The people are always pleasant to talk to. I've never had a problem with any of my accounts and fraudulent charges so I have no experience with how they will handle it. But from how they have dealt with me so far I would not expect trouble from them. Besides they also have a branch in the Walmart in goose creek. So i can bank late at night and on weekends.
