Anybody had anything chrome powdercoated? I'm sure you've seen my 4runner wheel for sale thread, I'm thinking more and more about just getting them coated. I can't stand going outside and seeing those ugly ass bling things sittin on the truck in the driveway.

Would imagine they would need to be blasted first, then coated. Who's good in the area? Mark's, etc.?

And how much does it typically run?

Looks like almost everything I needed was in a thread already...

So what's the verdict on who's the best, who has shit coated and how well is coating holding up? And what were prices?

Prep is the KEY.

i had a guy on a forum in the upstate do some stuff ( i think he was a guy like us, extra oven, bought cheap tools ) and he did not have a sand blaster.

so he did not get the chrome into a condition for the PC to stick, it peeled off in huge flakes after a few months on the bike (was on the air cleaner)

he redid it for free, so all good, but annoying.

so yeah, GOOGLE it or whatever, but chrome takes more effort.

Mt intake and motor plate in the LTD is chrome powder coated, by Marks in Moncks Corner. Looks more like a really shiney silver, not mirror like chrome..

This is who I use. They have always done me good and their prices are very reasonable. It's just a little out of the way for most.

Here is an intake that was done for me a few years back.

Yep! My uncle told me about their deal. You could probably powder coat a whole car with the size of their oven.

That should bake a couple of turkeys.

Thanks for the replies guys, and yeah the wheels are chrome now (sorry forgot to link the thread for reference) and selling doesn't look to promising. Had one guy interested but after he looked at them on his truck his exact words were, "I don't like them on my truck, makes it look like its owned by a black person." hahaha, oh well.

Yeah I figured good prep was the make or break step in doing these, I hope they don't charge an arm and a leg to media blast them before coating. I just want a really high gloss black like this called "Mirror Black".

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m157/jeffford15/jeepwheelsinmirrorblack.jpg

or a dark gunmetal... "Smoke Chrome"

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m157/jeffford15/smokechromeblackwheels009.jpg

I wish the guy who did this stuff was closer, seems to do a killer job. I'll call Austin's & Mark's though tomorrow and see what they say.

Just in case anybody is interested, here's a link to the thread where I found those photos, guy has a TON of stuff coated in all different colors, good place to get color ideas. I started looking from page 13 on up but there are probably even more photos in the earlier pages.

i would investigate "smoked chrome"

it's basically a real LIGHT covering of black, that lets the chrome shine through.

its the new RAGE in bike parts

Marchant powdercoating on Rivers Ave by Parks did the wheels on my TBSS....look awesome, and only $75/wheel for 20x8.5's.....and he has TONS of colors. Very easy to work with too. I didn't have another set of wheels so I dropped it off on a Tuesday afternoon and picked it up Friday morning.

Excellent service. Let me see if I can find a pic.....

EDIT: Speaking of smoke chrome, Marchant has a color he calls "Black magic" that looks very similar to that.......

TBSS rims look good. Makes me want to cover my SSS rims. Is the center cap metal or plastic on the TBSS?

PapaBear
11-15-2010, 12:00 PM
Center cap is plastic with a VERY thin aluminum cap on them. Marchant would not powdercoat mine, they had some pretty bad corrosion on them. I separated the plastic and aluminum cap and stripped and polished the metal. Then I put black vinyl bowties and cleared the hell out of them...

These black ones I bough from someone already done....

Wheels turned out really good! Did they clear coat them?

PapaBear

No clearcoat....straight gloss powder. $75 / wheel + mount/balance

Wow that looks really good man, yeah I'll have to check them out also. Spoke with Austin's, he said $300 for the set so $75 a piece also. But Rivers is a hell of a lot closer.

Check the turnaround time. I like Marchant but sometimes they take a while.

I had Marchant do a 9" rearend housing. I dont think I would let him do my wheels though. The coating on the rear is ok but its doesnt look smooth to me. Almost like an Orange peel look.

Turnaround time? I dropped truck off Tuesday at 12 noon. Picked it up on Friday morning.

Good.

My suggestion was to call Robert beforehand to make sure he wasn't jammed up.

As I have stated before, he has always taken care of me.

So he did everything, pulled the wheels off the truck, pulled the tires off the wheels, coated, then remounted and balanced?

PapaBear
11-17-2010, 06:16 PM
That is correct. I think total was $360 with mount balance everything, for 4 20x8 polished/clearcoated aluminum wheels to be stripped, blasted, coated, tires mounted/balanced, installed.

Truck went in rolling, came out rolling for $360.

That's not bad at all man. How's the balance, any vibration?
