I am in need of a front window for the camaro, and want to know the best place in town. I will be doing it under insurance so money doesn't really matter.
Thanks, Mike

I have always dealt with glasspro. It just a matter of calling and setting up an appointment. While on the phone, they will conference call the insurance company and get your authorization and claim number. That is it.

Man, I can't believe that. Danny has always been good to us. I suppose everyone has a bad day, every once in a while.
This thread, though, looks like everyone has their own opinions. Maybe see who your insurance company recommends.

I have a buddy who has been installing glass for years. He just quit safelite to start a glass company with a friend of his that also worked at safelite. 843-478-7613 Adam. I think its called trycounty auto glass.

My insurance company has a partnership with safelitle, so I guess that's who I'll be going with.
Thanks for all the input.

Damn I wish I had read this earlier. I used Safelite to do my Dodge windshield since they were right down the street. Mistake. The tech used what looked like a sawzall with no teeth on the blade to cut out my old glass and cut up the a-pillar plastic and chewed up the dash. That was after having to redo it because the first tech missed a 2 inch strip of sealant at the bottom of the window and it sounded like a airplane taking off inside the truck when the turbo spooled. Never again. Avoid Glassmasters too, they just replaced the back glass in my current Dodge and put in a used (remanufactured) slider. BS! When I worked for the DOT we always used glasspro with no problems.

I used safelite and they did a bang-up job IMO. The tech's that did the camaro were very professional, efficient, and their work was flawless.
The took the A Pillars out, and actually redid all the weather stripping because I said I didn't like it.

Safelite is a joke. I did auto glass for 4+ years........Safelite has a monopoly on the industry and it's friggin ridiculous.
By the way, your insurance company doesn't have a "partnership" with Safelite. Safelite owns LYNX services, who is the company that handles all the claims....so naturally, they're gonna steer you to safelite. They make money on the claim, they make the glass, they make money on the install......easy money.
Problem is, Safelite pays their installers by the job.....not by the hour. All you guys are smart enough to figure out what that means right? They do the work the fastest way they can do it so they can make more money in a day. This leads to shitty workmanship and glass dropped on fenders......Not to mention they make and sell the shittiest glass on the planet. You guys with Safelite windshields, go outside, open your passenger door and walk away from the car. Look through the passenger door opening SIDEWAYS at the glass....notice anything? I'm sure the glass looks wavy when you look at it from the side. It is shitty glass....PERIOD.
Sorry you have to go through this, but remember this and tell ALL your friends and family. When it's time for glass, if your insurance is paying the bill, you can call ANY GLASS SHOP ANYWHERE, and have that shop call your insurance company. Don't call your insurance company or they're gonna send Safelite...PERIOD.
Your insurance company cannot tell you where to take it. If you call them and tell them you want XYZ company to do your glass, they will be fine with what you want.
By the way, you always get the best work from Mom 'n' pop type shops. Even glasspro pays their installers by the job. I worked for safelite, glasspro, triumph, glassmasters, and southern glass in west ashley.
Southern glass small shop, A++++ service and workmanship, and hourly employees. Best shop I ever worked at.
Oh by the way, if you tell your insurance company you want OEM glass, they WILL pay for it. But if you don't tell them, you're gettting the cheapest shop with the cheapest glass.
RANT OVER, sorry about your fender

x2...pilkington has some pretty good glass. Safelites glass sucks. Like papabear said you have to request an oem glass to get it. Did auto glass for 2 years myself.

Well I guess I'm just an ignorant sucker, cause I was pleased with their service and I have had no problems with it, but I might in the future? I guess I made an assumption that any glass company selling glass had to sell DOT glass, is this not true?
PapaBear
02-10-2011, 09:21 PM
It is DOT rated, but if you could see a Safelite glass and a PPG or Pilkington or dealer side by side, you would see what I mean.
Glass is glass, it's just the quality. Even more so the quality of the glass, I don't want them working on my vehicles. It's go/go/go/go get it done, not do a good job and do it right.
Take it from industry experience, Safelite is where the hacks work....bottom line. That's not true entirely. They had some good installers, but usually it's all about the money when you work for them. You can do half-assed work and do a lot of it and make a shit-ton of money.

good words, PBear....
i was not too upset, but dude's manager did not call me today to check on the damage.
that makes me more mad, than the guy doing it, that his manager just blew it off.
maybe he will call tomorrow?
PapaBear
02-10-2011, 10:42 PM
maybe...but don't let up. They have crazy insurance for just these things. Make sure you TELL them where you want to take it for damage to be fixed, otherwise they're gonna go with the bodyshops in town that they do work for. And believe me, if a body shop uses Safelite, it's not the shop you want your car to go to for repairs!
So what's the consensus on windshield repair. Anyone else use bwelch's guy, seems like the only one without any complaints in this thread.

If you dont have full coverage, I know a guy who does them cheap.
He put a used windshield in a honda accord for me for 60 bucks.
Put a new windshield in my dually for 185. Probably cheap glass, but im not complaining.
He didnt fuck anything up that ive noticed so far.
Glasspro charged me over 300 bucks to put a windshield in my little acura a while back.

I need 1 in the trailblazer it has a laminated factory glass an has the rain sensor on it ...... just been wondering if they will f it up ????
PapaBear
09-01-2011, 06:40 PM
Nope. The vracket for sensor comes on the glass. It's a common thing and a very uncommon thing to get broken. Use a good installer unlike safelite and u will be okay. No worries
