Story:
A 24-year-old New York woman told Charleston police she was scammed out of $4,000 when she tried to sell a car on Craigslist, according to a police report.
The woman told police she listed her car for sale at a price of $800, and a man who identified himself as Mike Wilson contacted her, agreed to buy the car, and sent her a check for $4,800.
The seller called the buyer, who told her his accountant had made a mistake, and the additional $4,000 was for transporting the vehicle to South Carolina.
The buyer told the seller to use Western Union to wire the extra money back to him. She sent the money last Wednesday, and Western Union told her it was picked up in Charleston that day, the report said.
The Candor, N.Y., woman's bank told her that the original check for $4,800 was fraudulent, the report said.
