I have a conventional home oven I plan on using in the garage for a powder coat oven. My water heater is in the garage and has 220v service. The box is mounted outside the drywall in the garage and has flexible conduit from the box to the water heater. 30 amp dedicated breaker in the fuse panel.

Can I tap into the water heater supply wiring for the oven and install a plug coming from that box? OR does the oven need a dedicated service as well?

Usually an Oven uses a 50a breaker/wiring. It would not be a good idea to try and run it on a 30a service. It could be done if you used some common sense.

I think im going to just install another dedicated service. I'd like to hvae a plug for a welder / oven so I can use one or the other at a time and the girlfriend can use hot water for shower, washing if she needs to.

I would think that when the water heater kicks on, and you are also running the oven, you will trip the breaker. Keeping them seperated would be better, and even safer, IMO.

Keep in mind that there are a myriad of different 240V plugs on welders out there that might be different than the standard 50A oven style.

I say go ahead and run a dedicated service line for your oven. Later, you can make an adapter pigtail to go from your oven receptacle to whatever receptacle that fits your future welder.

Yes! Run a dedicated line.

i agree. I have an electrician coming to my house because some how in the past NO DEDICATED circuits were ever ran and I have multiple light switches controlling the same source.

You probably just have switch boxes cut in wrong.

I have more issues than that. I have a light switch by my garage that controls the kitchen, laundry room, all 3 exterior lights. But I also have one separate for the kitchen, one for the floods, and one for the rear patio.
The light switch in my daughters room controls everything from ceiling fan to wall outlets.

The office controls its ceiling fan and wall outlets along with my daughters room.

I have a light in the garage that IS ALWAYS ON, no switch source.

If I turn the breaker off for the kitchen, it kills the garage lights, but the exteriors also stay on.

Needless to say, mine is a nightmare and the electrician is suppose to be coming by wednesday to fix all that and add a 40 space 200 amp panel. I currently have 20 spaces and well with everything piggy backed off of each other a 40 space is need. Everything will be fixed.

Sounds like fun. Had to change out my panel aslo for more room. That was loads of fun.
